Sabbatical
By
Frank Parrish
This column marks the 104th
since I began writing for the Globe. That’s two years of looking
at things from my often warped perspective. At least I’ve been
told my perspective is often warped. Some people have even
questioned my sanity, but there is no question about that. I’ll
let you decide that answer.
These years have been fun, and a lot cheaper than therapy. I’ve
enjoyed the discipline of writing, the pressure of meeting a deadline,
and the opportunity to be creative. More than these, I’ve been
blessed by the comments I have received. Many of you have told me
you read my rants, laugh along, and identify with some of the
situations. That’s a marvelous connection, but I must say, you
worry me if you’ve identified too closely with some of what I’ve
written. If so, then you need as much therapy as I. Yikes!
But thanks just the same.
The point of this week’s musing is to let you know that I’m taking some
time off from writing the column. I guess it could be called a
sabbatical, which means a break or a change from a normal routine (as
of employment). But since I’m not employed to write a column I
suppose I can’t call it a sabbatical. So I’m just calling it a
break. I need some time to gather my wits, or actually find them,
since they seem to have flown away somewhere. I want to continue
writing but I want it to be fresh and better than it’s ever been
before. I need a break to do that.
I want to thank each of you for your support over the last two years,
especially because you have graciously allowed me to poke fun at some
of you. Where I have offended you, I apologize. When I
return I’ll try my best not to do that again. Well, ok, I’ll
try. But you see, I haven’t promised you anything? It’s
hard not to offend people because we all have so many things that are
inherently idiotic…well never mind, I’ll just try my best.
For anyone who may question why I’m taking a break, let me just say
that I need some time to refill my creative well. A lot of what I
write comes from real-life situations, a lot does not. I try to
find the best of both and make a word caricature of it all. It
seems to have worked, but now I need to find new avenues for that to
happen. I know there is a lot of funny stuff out there, most of
it on the other side of when life doesn’t seem to be so funny. I
need to get to that place again. After all, life is way too
serious as it is. We need all the laughter we can get. Ok,
at least I do. Remember, it’s cheap therapy.
So think of me when you’re getting ready to do something really
stupid. I know I’ll be thinking of me when I do really stupid
stuff. I’ll be filing it all away for some future articles.
And while I’m at it, I will be putting the last two year’s worth of
articles in two books. If you’re interested let me know.
There will be a Volume I and II. They would make great gift ideas
for somebody who strongly dislikes you. They can be a sort of,
“Wow, they hate any gift they get, so why not get them these books”
thing.
Thanks again, and I’ll see you in the View From Here.
